Best of MINI Space 2008

Since MINISpace Kick-Off in July we certainly put a lot into the last 5 months:

We built a Rooftop in NYC, hosted a 10 day festival on this roof, went to Venice for the Architecture Biennale and to Rome for the CINEMA Rome Film Festival. We organized more than 4 design competitions, launched the MINI E at the LA Auto show, and featured the Check in Architecture project, the MINI Design Award, the ITS# Photoweb, the young directors project.... more

Giant interactive Advent Calendar

Giant Advents Calendar

While some towns just use Christmas lights and a tree to signal the festive season, other artists are electrifying their cities in a different way altogether. This year, Federation Square in Melbourne has a giant interactive advents calendar on its outdoor screen making it a public christmas event. more

Interview with Kazutaka Nagashima

Kazutaka Nagashima

Kazutaka Nagashima is a young photographic talent from Tokyo who, as the winner of the 2008 ITS Fotografica Competition, recently got to spend a day taking pictures in Italy with famed photographer Sarah Moon. Luckily for us, he was kind enough to answer some questions for MINISpace.

Here is what the 25 year old alum of Tokyo Polytechnic University had to say... more

Portfolio of the week: Artistas de España

Artistas de España

What is it that brings an artist from New Zealand to found a collective of artists whose life and work are based in Spain? This week's portfolio features Charles Olsen, the creator of the Artistas de España, an artists' collective that now boasts more than 115 members. And this is how he describes it. more

Design Challenge at LA Auto show 2008 goes futuristic!

LA Auto Show

What will race cars be like in the year 2025?
That was the question posed to the designers who participated in the fifth annual Design Los Angeles conference held on the second day of the LA Autoshow. more

The Art of Driving the MINI E

Second day at the LA Auto show and the MINI Space Team got to take the MINI E out for a drive through Los Angeles. Watch our editor Alison having fun driving all-electric and talking to other test drivers about the MINI E feeling. more

Driving the MINI E at LA Autoshow

Right after the unveiling of the new MINI E we got to take the MINI E for a short spin around downtown LA. Afterwards we chatted with Jim McDowell, vice president of MINI USA, and Dr. Wolfgang Armbrecht, senior vice president of brand management MINI, about the ideal MINI E driver. more

Premiere of the MINI E at the LA Auto Show

MINI E revealed at LA Auto show

It’s amazing, the MINI E makes no noise! None. This is what we learned today at a press conference at the LA Auto Show where the highly anticipated model had its world debut. To watch someone turn the vehicle on in the middle of the convention center and then see it glide away silently was literally like watching a silent movie. Jarring and yet also kind of peaceful. more

MINI Space Design Competition 2: Winners Announced!

Urban Oasis

You may have noticed things have been hotting up with our background design competition Urban Oasis. It seems like everyone wanted a piece of the action and the incredible prizes or course. We received nearly 3000 backgrounds!

Container Art & Vroom, Urban Oases of Creativity

Containerart

Containers. You know, those giant metal boxes used for goods transport. They can also be used for emergency accommodation in natural catastrophes, or other extreme situations. They are useful objects, emotionless, and free of any charm, aesthetic appeal or creative potential. At least, that appeared to be the case. And that is precisely the challenge of the Container Art project: How to use these objects, which we otherwise know only from the circumstances outlined above, as urban oases where it is possible to enjoy contemporary works of art. more

Bye, Bye, Roma!

Massimo Ranieri sul Red Carpet

It's starting to feel like goodbye in the MINI Lounge. The weather has improved again, and everyone's a little bit melancholy, given that the festival has now concluded. However, there is also a feeling that much has been accomplished, and a hope that everything has been done well. After the storms of recent days, an English rain accompanies the final stages of the festival, and brings it to its unavoidable end. more
