MINIInternational #30: The Ruhr Metropolis

The "Ruhr Metropolis" is fast becoming an insider tip. Everyone knows London and Berlin, but if you want to see or hear something really new, out of the ordinary and unconventional, take a look around the Ruhr district - one of Europe's most extensive conurbations. Just because the down-to-earth citizens of the Ruhr don't bang the drum as loudly as others doesn't mean they have nothing to say.

Everyday culture in the mining belt: small kiosks, like this one in Dinslaken Wehofen, are as much a part of the “Pott” as its coal.

After all, they have made a pretty good job of the region's sweeping structural transformation: where once tall chimneys belched smoke and hundreds of thousands of miners toiled below ground in the "Kohlenpott", the future is being shaped today. Modern architecture in Duisburg, creative designers in Essen and Dortmund, alternative energy projects in Gelsenkirchen, avant-garde musicians in Mülheim - the Ruhr is busy embracing all things future. In its latest issue, MINIInternational sets out to discover this old, new industrial belt.

A green outlook is virtually taken for granted in the Ruhr these days. From inside the School of Design you can see trees growing out of old slag heaps.

The Ruhr rocks. Not that London, New York and Berlin need quake in their shoes, but what is happening in the Ruhr valley is quite extraordinary. Forget about smoking chimneystacks and hard graft in underground mine shafts - these days it's all happening above ground.

The pragmatic denizens of the Ruhr refused to be dragged down by the decline of their traditional coal and steel industry, and are currently in the business of reinventing themselves - as a design hub and cultural centre. The Ruhr Metropolis, as the 53 municipalities from Essen to Dortmund and Unna to Duisburg collectively call themselves, is slated to be the European City of Culture in 2010, and already creative shoots are fast appearing: light-art in Unna, state-of-the-art architecture in Duisburg, solar technology in Gelsenkirchen, avant-garde music in Bochum and Mülheim, cutting-edge design in Dortmund and Essen.

Carpet designers such as Jan Kath, graffiti artists like Mason or the creative fashionistas of Mode wichtig prove there are plenty of brilliant ideas emerging from this part of the world. Elsewhere people would be proud to lay claim to a fraction of these enterprises - in the Ruhr you won't find any hype surrounding them.

The attitude towards the new drive that infuses this region is distinctly laidback and success isn't broadcast loudly to the world. This is one of Europe's largest conurbations and it would surely be ironic if one didn't have anything creative to say. Below ground the miners used to grapple with different matters entirely. One thing's for certain: we will be hearing a great deal more about the "Kohlenpott".
